Tournament info

Each team plays six (U10) or seven (U12) competitive games against strong opponents. Games take place on four courts across two large sports halls with 2.60 m baskets. Live online schedule, licensed referees, team photos, individual photos, and professional game photos for every team are all included. A large award ceremony with medals for all children is also part of the experience. Well-spaced breaks and extensive catering ensure the necessary rest and refreshments throughout the tournament.

Tournament format U10

In four groups of four teams each, initial rankings are determined in the group stage. The first- and second-placed teams from each group then compete in the playoffs to determine the New Year’s Cup winner. Teams finishing third and fourth in their groups enter the playdowns, forming their own final round. This format is designed to provide as many exciting games as possible against evenly matched opponents. Each team plays six games: three group stage games and three placement games.

Tournament format U12

To provide teams traveling from further away with a better experience, the U12 New Year’s Cup takes place over two days.

In eight groups of four teams each, initial rankings are determined in the group stage. The first- and second-placed teams from each group then compete in the playoffs to determine the New Year’s Cup winner. Teams finishing third and fourth in their groups enter the playdowns, forming their own final round. This format is designed to provide as many exciting games as possible against evenly matched opponents.

Each team plays seven games. On the first day of the tournament, the three group stage games and the round of 16 take place. On the second day, the remaining three games of the final round are played. In 2027, we will once again play in two time slots:

Saturday morning: Group stage & round of 16 for Groups A–D
Saturday afternoon: Group stage & round of 16 for Groups E–H
Sunday morning: Final round for Groups A–D (quarterfinals & semifinals)
Sunday midday: Final round for Groups E–H (quarterfinals & semifinals)
Sunday afternoon: Final placement games & award ceremony for all teams

This schedule ensures a better distribution of breaks. With the exception of the final afternoon on Sunday, the break for each team is at most one game. In addition, free mornings/afternoons have been created, which can be used for recovery or to explore the beautiful old town of Heidelberg.

Game mode

Each game consists of 5 x 4 minutes of running time. Substitutions, as in german minibasketball, are only allowed between periods. Games are played 4-on-4 on baskets with a height of 2.60 m.

In the U10 category, only players born in 2017 or later are eligible; in U12, only players born in 2015 or later may participate. Exceptions may be approved by the tournament management. Upon request, proof of age must be provided. Each player must play at least one period per game and sit out two periods.

We ask every team to participate with at least eight players.

Due to the running clock, there are no free throws. Instead, after a shooting foul, two or three points are awarded directly. In the case of an and-one, the foul counts as an additional point. From the fourth team foul onwards, each team foul results in one point awarded to the opposing team. Possession does not change. A player fouls out after four personal fouls and must leave the court immediately.

For all situations, the principle of a quick inbound without passing the ball to the referees applies.

For basic rules the mini basketball rules of the German Basketball Federation apply. Miniregeln des DBB, There are no time rules (24sec, 8sec, 5 sec, 3sec) and no timeouts.

Scorers table

In 2027, the scorer’s table will once again be digital. It will be operated by the teams that are not playing at that time. The responsible team for each game can be found in the schedule. Especially in the U10 age group, it is recommended that parents (possibly together with the players) take on this role. Responsibilities include keeping score, monitoring playing time, and recording fouls. At least two people are required, each operating a tablet.

The application phase has started!

The SGK New Year’s Cup aims to provide an unforgettable basketball experience that inspires young athletes and strengthens their passion for this great sport. The main goal is fun for all participating children, a supportive environment, and a positive tournament atmosphere. Interested teams can now apply to participate.
